THE FILM
Director Teinosuke Kinugasa uses all sorts of visual distortions and
stylistic quirks to present the world of a mental asylum from the
perspective of those on the inside, a narrative form that deliberately
skews rational interpretation. The story (without the aid of subtitles)
follows the janitor,
who is trying to help a reluctant inmate (his
wife) escape.
A truly avant-garde work, A PAGE OF MADNESS is strikingly modern in its
visual repertoire of superimpositions, shifts of focus, rapid edits and
visual effects.
THE SCORE
ITN’s mesmerising score incorporates traditional Japanese
instrumentation, percussion and unnerving electronics.
European release date July 26th.
IN THE NURSERY will
provide live musical accompaniment to the Japanese expressionist silent
film 'A PAGE OF MADNESS' (1926)
at a selection of Film Festivals in Australia and New Zealand during
July.
